Per GIA, natural aquamarine typically comes out of the ground as a light, slightly greenish blue — a pure blue aquamarine with no green undertone at all is rare enough that most stones on the market have been mildly heat-treated to shift them toward blue. Blue topaz works the opposite way: virtually all of it starts as colorless topaz, which is abundant and cheap, then is irradiated with high-energy electrons or gamma rays in a reactor or accelerator and heat-treated afterward to develop its blue color. On the Mohs hardness scale, topaz measures a full 8, slightly harder than aquamarine's 7.5 to 8. On paper that makes topaz the more scratch-resistant stone. But hardness isn't the whole durability picture: topaz has perfect basal cleavage, meaning it can split cleanly along one plane if struck at the wrong angle — a real risk during setting, resizing, or an accidental knock.
