How the layout works

Pick a style, then type your initials. A woman's traditional three-letter monogram centers and enlarges the surname initial, with the first name's initial on the left and the middle name's on the right — so "Sarah Jane Smith" reads S · S · J, not S · J · S. A man's traditional monogram keeps the letters in plain reading order, first-middle-last, with no size change. A couple's or shared monogram is simpler still: two letters, side by side, in whichever order you prefer. Only a single letter? Our initial necklaces page covers that narrower style instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What order do the letters go in a monogram?

It depends on who is wearing it. Traditional women's monograms put the surname initial in the center, drawn larger, with the first name on the left and the middle name on the right — so "Sarah Jane Smith" becomes S · S · J, not S · J · S. Traditional men's monograms skip the size change and simply read first-middle-last, left to right, the same order the names are said in.

Why is the surname's initial in the middle for a woman's monogram, not at the end?

It's an old heraldry convention that stuck: the family name is the anchor, so it sits in the visual center and gets drawn larger, with the given names flanking it. It reads oddly at first if you're used to seeing initials in name order, but it's the format engravers and monogram jewelry have used for generations.

Is there a 'correct' order for a couple's or shared monogram?

Less so — a two-letter combined monogram (two first initials, or a couple sharing one last initial) doesn't have the same fixed centering rule as a three-letter personal one. Most couples just pick the order that reads best to them, sometimes alphabetical, sometimes whoever's name they say first.

What if I only have two initials, or want four?

This generator handles the two most common cases — a personal three-letter monogram and a two-letter shared one — because that's what the products we make actually engrave. The engraving field is labelled for three initials, but two works fine for a couple's monogram; we don't currently offer a four-letter option.

Does FARUZO make monogram jewelry?

Yes — monogram necklaces, rings, stud earrings and cufflinks, each engraved with your exact letters. The necklaces, rings and earrings come in a choice of metal; the cufflinks come in a choice of Script or Capital font.
