Different Types of Earring Backs
- Push Backs
This is the most common of all earring back types. It is also known as butterfly earring closure because of its shape; it’s made of wire with a hole in the middle that fits the earring post. Push backs are the cheapest type, but they are easy to lose and often need to be replaced. - Screw Backs
It looks just like a pushback at first glance. But this earring back requires a post with a long groove to screw into the earring. This type of earring back is secure, so it’s advisable to have precious studs like ruby or diamond you cannot afford to lose. - Latch Backs
It is best for hoops and heavy dangly earrings; its post is hinged and used to attach to a metal latch. The shape and design of the latch vary depending on the style. - Fish Hook
This earring back is made of curved wire attached to the earring. It is also known as French wire. It’s meant to be hooked into the pierced ear and doesn’t require any earring backs since the earring’s weight will hold it down securely. Consequently, this is also best for relatively heavier dangly earrings.
French wires are affordable and are more convenient to take off. But not having an earring back means it’s easy to lose your earrings. For added security, it’s advisable to use an actual earring back, preferably a rubber one, since it’s not easy to find a metal earring back that fits. - Lever Backs
These backs can be said to be a combination of Fishhook and Latch back. It’s best for heavier and dangly earrings but is secured with a hinged post and catch mechanism. The added feature is the lever that acts as a lock to the attached post.
Lever backs are understandably more expensive, but it’s more secure in keeping your dangly earrings due to its design. - Bella Bead Backs
This is a novelty earring back that solves the problem for people who are not comfortable with their earring posts poking at them. It’s a bead that attaches to the end of the post. - Omega Clip
This earring back can be worn by both pierced and unpierced earlobes, also known as a French clip. It has an open clasp that firmly attaches to the earlobe and through which the post goes through when closed. This is best for heavy earrings with gemstones, as this design is meant to prevent the earlobe from drooping at an awkward angle.

Lever backs
This type of earring closure is perfect for heavier earrings, and they are also easy to wear and take off.
Lever backs are as elegant as the dangle or drop earrings they’re attached to. They complement these types of earrings by allowing them to sway a little with each movement.
